It’s More Than Calories In / Calories Out.

 

Fact: one can lose weight by consuming fewer calories than they burn. But the mystery of how our mind and belief system affects our weight and weight loss should also be considered. The recent issue of Health Magazine contained these two tidbits:

 

** According to the North American Journal of Psychology subjects who visualized themselves going through a specific strength workout gained nearly as much strength as those who actually did the workout. (24 % versus 28%). Remember, more muscle means more calories burned, even when you are at rest.

 

** Housekeepers who were told cleaning was good exercise, lost weight and were healthier four weeks later than those who were told nothing, according to a study in Psychological Science.

 

What does this mean to you? It means when you tell yourself “I can’t lose weight,” or you waste time thinking, “I’m lazy. All I ever want to do is veg in front of the TV,” you are setting yourself up for failure.

 

One of the most helpful services I offer my clients is to help identify their self-sabotaging thinking, talk and belief systems and then work with them to reframe their thinking and change their self-talk. Do I spend an equal amount of time getting them to change their behavior? Yes! But to change the behavior without changing the thinking and self-talk is futile. You’ll think, and talk, the weight right back on.

 

Life is full of mystery. Exactly how our mind and body work together to produce results is part of that mystery. But just because you don’t fully understand it, is no reason to discount the fact that positive intentional thinking results in positive outcome and negative thought patterns are detrimental to your success.

Grape fruit 3 times a day ??

You must try this.

My client and friend Jan observed, “If you see someone walking down the hall eating an apple, take note: that person is skinny.” She says skinny people eat apples!

Health Magazine reported that women who added apples to their daily routine – without changing anything else about what they ate – lost 2 pounds in 10 weeks, according to one study.

They also say people who ate half a grapefruit three times a day lost 3.6 pounds in 12 weeks – 3 pounds more than those who didn’t. The grapefruit eaters had smaller waistlines, too.

Take the grapefruit-apple challenge with me. Log in to the blog and tell me if you are willing to do this. I’m going to give it a try. One apple and 1.5 grapefruits per day.

Here is a grapefruit recipe for 170 calories. It is yummy.

Preheat broiler. Cut 1 grapefruit in half and spread 2 tsp. honey on top of one half Broil for 7 minutes or until the edges are golden. Top with 1 tablespoon chopped walnuts.

(note: I've been cutting the amount of honey and nuts & putting the nuts on before I broil it.)

Now, I know red flags may be going up for some of you. Sandra endorsing the grapefruit diet? Really?

No. I’m simply adding grapefruits and one apple a day to my already healthy eating plan, which also includes a daily dose of dark chocolate. While I’m getting swimsuit ready, for a May scuba diving vacation.
